Writing Workshop with Peter Thomas

I really found this session so useful! Peter spoke through all about writing as well as giving us a writing task known as free writing. Our topic was ' What is Writing' and we had to free write for 5 minutes not reading over our work and not deleting anything.
Here is what I wrote...

'Writing is something we as humans do on a regular basis. We can do it on paper on laptops on devoces even with chalk on the floor. It is a skill learnt at a very young age and can take a long time to achieve. Often it takes a long time for people to grasp the handwriting technique and also as students grow older cursive writing can pose a real challenge. Writing is often used in academia and as a student on the BAPP course in Middlesex University writing is a big part of my assessment. I do not have any exams so it is all about how I present and write about my practice and inquiry. Writing can be quite difficult at times and especially when there is a word count. I find this rather challenging as I often go over the word count for assignments. I then have to go back over my work and remove sentences and paragraphs which leads to what I then feel is disjointed writing. Writing without a flow that does not read well off the page. I am currently writing a personal statement for a ucas application and I am having this difficulty. It is hard to condense my writing without losing the fluidity.Writing is a fantastic method of communication and without writing we would not have books and play scripts.'

Albeit a few spelling mistakes I was quite pleased with what I wrote. This skill is something I haven't used before and as my biggest problem is getting started with writing I think this will be a fantastic way for me to get going!

Process of writing

Generate ideas

At this stage don't worry about the reader just get your ideas out on paper, mindmapping or dictating to a recording device.

Then organise

Map relationships between the ideas and themes.

And finally present

Here you proofread and think about how it sounds to the reader.

Properties

Think about the PURPOSE, THE READER and CONTEXT.

Helen mentioned about how this process of writing is no different to when we choreograph a piece we have to think about the PURPOSE, what we want to show he audience and the context of piece.

Thank you Peter!!!
